Expert Loft Clearances

Pests, like rats, mice, squirrels and birds, often nest in our lofts as they provide the perfect shelter. Loft spaces are typically undisturbed and full of potential nesting materials and food sources, making them the ideal location for numerous pests.

Unfortunately, while such pests are living in your loft, they will cause a mess that, if left untreated, will result in health and safety hazards for you and your loved ones. Because of the dangers of insulation, combined with the hazards caused by pests, we strongly advise you not to attempt any DIY loft cleaning.

Here at Countrywide, our specialist technicians are fully equipped with the appropriate PPE and professional pest control solutions necessary to conduct a thorough loft clearance.

If you’ve had pests living in your loft, please contact us today or book a free survey using our online forms.

Why Pest Control Loft Cleaning is Essential

Pests love to make themselves at home in loft spaces. Unfortunately, rodents and birds can cause extensive amounts of damage to your possessions and your home itself. Additionally, they are known carriers of disease, placing you and your loved ones at risk.

These are the main two reasons why it’s absolutely essential to use the services of a pest control professional for your loft cleaning services.

Disease

Rodents, like mice, rats, and squirrels, along with birds like pigeons, are some of the biggest transmitters of disease in the animal kingdom. For example, evidence of the Hantavirus infection has been found in UK commensal rodents. If left untreated, Hantavirus leads to flu-like symptoms and difficulty breathing before resulting in haemorrhagic fever.

Additionally, the virus Leptospira which causes Leptospirosis is carried by 14% of rats and 80% of mice here in the UK. Leptospirosis, also known as Weil’s Disease, can lead to serious health complications, including kidney and liver failure.

Pigeons also carry numerous diseases that can lead to conditions requiring medical attention, including Histoplasmosis, Psittacosis, Cryptococcosis, and E. coli.

One of the main ways in which the deadly diseases they carry are passed onto humans is via their faeces. Direct contact with faecal matter is one method of transmission. However, the most common method is inhalation. As the droppings dry, they contaminate the dust particles around them with these deadly viruses. The contaminated air can then flow freely through your home before it’s inhaled by a family member or even a pet. Once this occurs, the virus has then entered the bloodstream, and medical treatment is required.

Even if your loft is no longer infested with rodents or birds, you may still be at risk of catching a potentially deadly disease. For example, scientists recently found that Salmonella can survive in rat faeces for up to 86 days, and E. coli has been recovered from rodent droppings over 36 weeks later.

When we perform a pest control loft clearance, our technicians will remove any trace of droppings from your premises, leaving you safe from the health risks they create.

Damage

On top of the dangerous diseases they carry, pests also cause serious amounts of damage to your property. Birds will enter your loft to nest, but to do so they need nesting materials – and guess what, your loft is probably full of them!

Insulation makes for the perfect nesting material, as it’s warm, easy to mould and there’s plenty of it in your loft space. Pigeons and seagulls will rip your loft insulation to shreds, leaving you with a considerable amount of mess and materials that are no longer fulfilling their purpose.

Additionally, bird droppings, or guano as they’re also referred to, are highly acidic. They contain high amounts of Uric Acid, which is strong enough to corrode metal, paintwork, and brickwork. Over time, as the bird droppings build up in your loft, they will begin to melt through your possessions and even the structure of your home, resulting in costly repair jobs.

Rodents are even worse for causing extensive damage to your home. One of the species defining characteristics is their incisor teeth which do not stop growing. In order to maintain them, rodents need to spend a large majority of their time chewing on materials to grind them down.

Rats, mice and squirrels will chew through wooden beams, resulting in structural damage to the property, as well as any possessions being stored in the loft. They have even been known to chew through electrical wires, resulting in a huge fire hazard.

The damage that pests can cause to your home is immense, and it can even continue long after the infestation is removed. To prevent further damage and protect your property and the belongings inside, call us today on 0800 078 7255 to book your loft clearance.

Our Loft Cleaning Process

Let’s take a closer look at what our Loft Cleaning services entail.

  • Step 1: Disinfection

Our loft clearances begin with a disinfection treatment. Using professional-grade equipment, your local pest control technician will apply a disinfectant biocide designed specifically against rodent-borne diseases.

During your free survey, we will determine the best course of action for applying the disinfectant. Typically we will use cold fogging machines, or we will apply the disinfectant directly to affected areas using a sprayer.

  • Step 2: Loft Clearance

Once the disinfection has occurred and the area is safe from disease, we will begin removing all contaminated materials. Again, the degree of clearance will be determined in the site survey – whether or not the removal of affected items is sufficient or a full loft clearance is necessary.

We will take care to remove all presence of pests, along with insulation where necessary. We will remove all loft insulation before fitting new materials around the loft space if required. Once all contaminated materials have been removed successfully, we then carry out a thorough vacuum of the entire loft to remove any debris left behind.

Finally, we reapply another disinfection treatment to ensure we’ve reached all areas and removed the diseases in full.

  • Step 3: Pest Proofing Services

Once the loft clearance and disinfection treatments have been completed, it’s time to figure out how the pests gained access to your loft in the first place.

Rodents often chew their way through your roofline, targeting fascias and open wall cavities. Once the loft has been cleared, such access points will be easier to identify. Our pest controllers are trained to find entry points like these, and once they do, we have a number of expert proofing measures we can employ to seal the holes and ensure the problem cannot return.

As well as this, our highly experienced technicians can offer you guidance and advice on how to pest-proof your home, offering their top tips for deterring pests and keeping your loved ones safe.
